In 2003, Dennis Kefallinos purchased the property and converted the space into art studios and lofts as part of Detroit's revitalization and urban renewal. Located at 1600 Clay Street, it was designed and built by the noted architect Albert Kahn in 1915 for the Murray Body Corporation, supplier of bodies for the Ford Motor Company and the third largest auto-body company in the United States. But the RIC, as it is known locally, is an example of Detroit's urban development with more than 150 tenants, including architects, painters, clothing designers, photographers, musicians, filmmakers and art galleries. By contrast, Chicago's Merchandise Mart covers over 4 million square feet. The Russell Industrial Center in Detroit, Michigan, is a complex of seven buildings that cover 2.2 million square feet with studios, lofts and shops and serves as a professional center for commercial and creative arts.
